Может показаться странным, что автор самого знаменитого в истории челове­чества исторического романа не любил историю. Он всю жизнь отрицательно относился и к истории как к науке, находя ее ненужной и бессмысленной, и про­сто к истории как к прошлому, в котором видел непрекращающееся тор­жество зла, жестокости и насилия.

Булгаков не мог рассказать о современной Москве, противопоказанной интеллигент­ному человеку, профессору. Он не мог сделать так, чтобы он погибал, подобно тому, как в «Дьяволиаде» погибает ее герой, маленький человек. Он сделал одну, первую — и она же последняя — попытку изобразить маленького чело­века. Он хотел изображать других.
